Regardless of how big your building is, a roof leak will always be bad news. If it isn’t resolved right away, it can lead to roof rot, mold, and other types of damage that no homeowner will be happy about. Aside from the damage, just think of how impractical and inconvenient it is to have to get and lay out buckets to catch the leaking water whenever it’s raining. And don’t forget how that one leak could lead to even bigger roof problems that will take more time and money to repair!
Now that you know how important it is to get a roof leak fixed right away, the next thing you need to do is figure out the cause. Finding out what is causing the leak will help determine the best solution that can fix the current issue and prevent any in the future. A few examples of possible causes would be holes, damaged shingles, and gutter issues. In this week’s featured project, we cover one common cause that many homeowners will eventually face.
Leaky Old Chicken Coop Roof in Vancouver
In this week’s featured project, the roof of our client’s chicken coop was worn out and leaking. The reason behind the roofing issues was old age. Common asphalt shingles usually last around 20 years. Fiber cement shingles, on the other hand, last around 25 years. Wood shingles last 30 years, while metal or tile roofing will last 50 years and more. Regardless of how high quality the roofing material you used is, it will eventually need to be replaced because of the wear and tear brought about the passage of time.
The chicken coop’s roof had gotten so old, it had already started deteriorating. It was now too brittle to completely prevent the chicken coop from leaks. Aside from the damage these leaks can cause, we definitely do not want our client’s precious chickens getting wet!
Quick and Effective Roof Replacement
In an effort to save our client’s investment, we worked on replacing the chicken coop’s old roof. We removed their old roofing and replaced it with Owens Corning Duration shingles, which are high-performance roofing shingles that are resistant to wind and algae.
Our team also installed an ice and water shield, that serves as an underlayment to roofs that will protect any vulnerable areas from water and ice damage. Lastly, we also installed an X30 synthetic felt, which will serve as another layer protection from the elements. It is tough, safe, and repels water compared to ordinary felt.
The entire project only took a day. This chicken coop is a great example of how a quality roof can make a difference. With this roof replacement, our client can now enjoy the new roof for much longer. They will also no longer have to worry about the roof giving out, as it is now safer and sturdier. It will save them more money in the long run, since it can prevent any expensive water damage.
